Transend Networks Operates Tasmania's Electrical Grid

CARLSBAD, CA, November 08, 2011 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Energy Digital looks at Transend Networks Pty Ltd. Technology is a cornerstone for Transend, and the company has invested in it wisely to meet customer demand. "Technology is where Tasmania offers opportunity," says Clark. For example, the rest of Australia is following Tasmania's lead when it comes to dynamic rating of transmission lines, in which Transend ranks as a world leader. The process improves current carrying capacity of existing lines by 20 per cent over static ratings.

The company has also implemented a system protection scheme. The scheme allows high loadings on its assets during Basslink operation, boosting capacity to 630 MW export and 480 MW import. "The wind farm in the northwest corner of Tasmania hasn't got the capacity to sustain when we lose transmission in the area," notes Clark, "so when a transmission line is out, the system can automatically compensate."

These infrastructure upgrades also include the installation of higher temperature conductors that allow more electricity through lines without having to build new towers. The company is investing further into asset management systems and IT upgrades to streamline procurement, payroll and other financial processes.

About Transend Networks

Transend Networks Pty Ltd owns and operates the electricity transmission system in Tasmania, Australia. The company formed following the government-mandated division of the Hydro-Electric Commission (now known as Hydro Tasmania) into separate generation, transmission, distribution and retail businesses in 1998. Transend took over the role of electrical transmission and in 2000 became responsible for operating Tasmania's power system when staff and relevant IT systems were passed on from Hydro Tasmania.

On 29 May 2005, Tasmania joined Australia's national electricity market, where the National Electricity Market Management Company (NEMMCO), which is now the Australian Energy Market Operator (AEMO), took responsibility for security of the NEM power system.

On 28 April 2006, Transend's transmission system was physically connected to the NEM grid when Basslink, an undersea cable across Bass Strait, started operating.

In November 2008, Transend bought Communications Services (a telecommunications business) from Hydro Tasmania. This was a strategic purchase that complements the company's electricity transmission business and builds on its strength in developing and operating infrastructure networks.

Since its founding in 1998, Transend has grown from a staff of 42 to employing 271 as of Summer 2011. The company, which operates as a state-owned regulated monopoly, has invested nearly AU$1 billion into Tasmania's grid infrastructure to provide safe, reliable and efficient electricity and telecommunications services.
