OBP: South Africa's Leading Animal Vaccines Manufacturer is Looking Forward to Healthy Competition
Onderstepoort Biological Products (OBP) is one of the leading manufacturers of animal vaccines in South Africa.

CARLSBAD, CA, November 05, 2011 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Onderstepoort Biological Products (OBP) is one of the leading manufacturers of animal vaccines in South Africa. Its routes can be traced back to over 100 years ago, after the outbreak of rinderpest in 1896. In what was to be the worst outbreak of a livestock disease in South Africa's history, approximately 50 percent of the country's livestock and 95 percent of cattle herds were killed.

"Our focus is on the production of livestock vaccines against common diseases," explains Jacob Modumo, the Managing Director (MD) of OBP. "We have got over 50 different vaccines that we use - 80 percent are bacterial vaccines, 10 percent of them are viral vaccines and the rest are blood vaccines," he adds.

Achieving a good manufacturing process (GMP) accreditation is a core focus of OBP. As well as supplying its vaccines to the whole of South Africa, OBP also exports its products to countries in the wider African continent and locations across Europe and the Middle East. "We decided in 2008 that for us to be competitive outside of South Africa the requirement is GMP and for us to be sustainable in Europe, we have to have GMP." Modumo asserts.

About OBP

OBP was initially joined with the Onderstepoort Veterinary Research Institute, which after the rinderpest outbreak in SA became the national centre for the investigation, diagnosis and prevention of the spread of animal diseases. A dedicated vaccine facility of the Institute was set up in 1968 after the SA government decided it wanted to elevate the production of vaccines specifically for livestock diseases. Eventually, however, OBP and the Onderstepoort Veterinary Research Institute separated, following the government's decision to privatise OBP and make it into a commercial company.
