In 1953, Baskin-Robbins was founded by Burt Baskin and Irvine Robbins when they merged their two ice cream parlors Burt's Ice Cream Shop and Snowbird Ice Cream respectively, in Glendale, California. With its famous 31 flavors, Baskin-Robbins claims to be the world's largest ice cream franchise, with more than 5,800 locations worldwide in over 30 countries. 2,800 are located just in the United States alone with its headquarters in Canton, Massachusetts.

The idea behind the "31 flavors" was generated by the Carson-Roberts advertising agency in 1953, along with the slogan "Count the Flavors. Where flavor counts." They were also on a mission to beat out the competition at Howard Johnson's restaurants, which only offered 28 flavors. Moreover, the number 31 was chosen so a customer could have a different flavor every day of any month, sampling each with the iconic small pink spoon.
